HOW DOES DOGS GET FLEAS AND TREATMENT

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DOG FROM TICKS AND FLEAS?

Avoiding tick and flea infestations in dogs is a constant concern for those who have dogs at home. In addition to being unpleasant, these pets can transmit diseases and pose a risk to the health of pets and their families. So it is very important to be aware of the first sign of these parasites in your pet and your home to eliminate them as soon as possible.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION

Ticks and fleas, in addition to being a nuisance to dogs, can cause serious illnesses for your pet and your family. Enjoy the moments of play, caring, brushing and bathing to always inspect your pet and eliminate these parasites as soon as they appear.

Attention!

Have you noticed that there are more ticks and fleas in the summer? Because it is warmer and more humid, this time of year presents the ideal conditions for the reproduction of these parasites. So, have extra attention during this period!

FLEAS

Fleas are parasites that feed on blood. They are small and brownish, move very quickly and have the ability to jump. They can transmit diseases and cause skin irritations.

How do you know if your pet has a flea?

You don’t have to wait for your dog to start scratching excessively to check for fleas. Perform routine inspections of your pet’s fur. If you find fleas or their feces, you need to take action.

Tip: Fleas like to settle in hot and stuffy places, so it is very common to find them on the ears, neck, belly and near the animals’ tail

How do animals catch fleas?

– Contact with infected animals, environments or objects;

Properties where contaminated animals have lived may still have flea eggs in cracks in the floor, corners of the house, recessed wooden furniture, carpets and rugs. Before taking your pet to this environment, it is recommended that you perform a good cleaning, using a vacuum cleaner, and perform the cleaning of the area.

AFTER ALL, HOW DO FLEAS WORK?

No squeezing these evil animals one by one. Among the experts, the consensus is that antiparasitic drugs are the safest and most efficient methods of how to stop fleas . Acting quickly, they can kill up to 99% of fleas in 4 hours. But have you ever wondered how they work?

According to Petz’s veterinarian, Dr. Marco Duarte Oliveira, fleas work in two ways: topical, which acts externally, and systemic, when the substance is absorbed.

“The most common is topical medication, which spreads the substance that fights fleas on the coat,” says the expert.

In the systemic form, the anti-flea, applied to the skin or ingested as a tablet, is absorbed by the body and reaches the bloodstream. “When feeding on the blood, the parasite comes into contact with the medication and dies,” explains Dr. Marco.

Check out the main types of fleas below and find out in which situations they are most suitable:

Pipette

It is one of the best known and most used methods for killing fleas. Practical and efficient, it can act in two ways: topical or systemic. This will depend on the brand chosen.

Generally, the contents of the pipette should be placed on the dog’s neck to prevent it from licking. Some pipettes also have a mosquito repellent effect. Therefore, they are highly recommended to avoid diseases transmitted by these insects, such as heartworm and leishmaniasis.

Tablet

Another widely used method, the pill acts in a systemic manner, killing fleas when they suck the dog’s blood. It is recommended especially for pets that bathe frequently. By acting from the inside out, the bath will not hinder its effectiveness.

Today it is easier to give pills to dogs, because there are several options with pleasant flavors. But, if your friend has difficulty in taking the medicine, a tip is to mix it in a portion of wet food.

Collar

They work in a similar way to the topical pipette: they spread the medicine on the dog’s skin and, in this way, reach the fleas. When choosing a collar, an essential care is to take into account the size of the animal.

This is because she must have the right amount of medicine, so as not to intoxicate her friend. Also, pay attention to the validity of the product! To be effective, collars must be changed according to the guidelines of each manufacturer.

Shampoo

Although they do not act in a preventive way, anti-flea shampoos are also efficient methods to eliminate parasites. Today, it is possible to find some on the market with the “knock down” effect, that is, that kill and drop fleas during the bath, leaving your friend clean and free of parasites immediately.

When handling the product, take care that it does not come into contact with the animal’s mucous membranes or is ingested. Also do not forget that fleas may be in the environment and, therefore, you should apply a long-lasting product after bathing, to keep the pet free from parasites.

How to prevent new flea infestation

In addition to medicines, it is important to take other precautions, such as eliminating fleas from the animal’s environment . This precaution is essential to ensure that your friend is free from reinfestations.

“It is worth remembering that 95% of these parasites live in the environment, in the form of eggs, larvae and pupae. This phase of the flea reproduction cycle takes around 140 days to 160 days ”, says Dr. Marco Duarte Oliveira.

In addition to regular cleaning, there is also the possibility of placing poison in the environment. But be careful: this should only be done with the guidance of a veterinarian or a company specialized in eliminating pests.

Prevention: the best medicine

To prevent your friend from suffering from fleas, prevention is the best way. This way, you ensure that the pet does not have new infestations and will be much more relaxed.

Talk to the vet! He is the best person to guide you on the most appropriate and efficient method for your four-legged child.

TICKS

Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of animals and can transmit serious diseases to both dogs and cats and to humans. In general, they are larger than fleas and move around slowly, so they are easier to find.

How to know if your pet has a tick?

Because they are bigger, when petting or brushing your animal, you can see if there are ticks on the animals.

Tip: It is very common for ticks to lodge under the ears, snout, neck and between the toes of animals.

How do animals catch ticks?

– Contact with animals or in environments with contaminated vegetation, leaves and wood;

Like fleas, ticks also remain for a long time in contaminated environments even without the presence of an animal. Avoid letting your pet walk or play in places with long grass or lots of wood and accumulated leaves.

In the buildings, they prefer to stay in higher places, in cracks and corners, recess of walls, under tiles and even in the kennel cover. Cleaning the environment before moving to a new home can go a long way in preventing contamination of your pet.

What to do when you find a tick?

If you find a tick in your pet, in your home or on yourself, remove it immediately.

To do this, use gloves and tweezers and place the tick in a container with alcohol to kill it. Do not squeeze the tick, as you can become contaminated with the blood ingested by the parasite. Also, do not throw it directly into the toilet, as it will not die and will continue to infect other animals.

HOW TO ELIMINATE TICKS FROM DOGS?

When you discover an infestation of ticks on your animals, only 5% of the problem is concentrated in the dog. The other 95% are already scattered around the house, carpets, clothes, toys and pet beds. Therefore, you must always treat the entire environment and not just the dog.

On the market, there are several types of products that help to eliminate these parasites. Check out some types:

NexGard (afoxolaner) is for use in dogs only. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, itching, lethargy, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. The safe use of NexGard in pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.

Drug & Food Interactions

In a well-controlled field study, NexGard was used concomitantly with other medications, such as vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics (including topicals), steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anesthetics, and antihistamines. No adverse reactions were observed from the concomitant use of NexGard with other medications. For specific questions about your dog, we recommend that you consult with your veterinarian.

Precautions

Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.
